“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be, and embracing who we are.” – Brene Brown
The first time I read this quote it was like 100 light bulbs lit up above my head. It just made so much sense and I was in love with the way Brene had simplified a concept that has always seemed so vague and confusing to me.
It made me realize that I had been going about things in all the wrong ways. I had spent so much of my life over thinking the question “Who am I?” and allowing my ego to pipe up and lead me astray.
Your ego has no business trying to tell you who you are. That’s a job for your soul, that beautiful light within you that always knows what’s best for us, yet we frequently choose to ignore.
You know the one. That little whisper that pipes up when we are looking for answers before our head gets in on it and overanalyzes the heck out of the situation.
In order to embrace your authenticity (like a boss!) you need to get out of your head and move into your heart.
Right now you might be saying, “Ok Lexx, that’s all fine and dandy but how the heck do I even begin to do that?”
I’ve got your back sistah! Here are my best tips and tricks for learning to tap into your intuition, reduce the noise of your ego and embrace the heck out of your authenticity.
1. Get to know your radiant self on a deeper level.
When was the last time you took yourself out on a date? If you’re racking your brain for the answer and can’t come up with one then this is your priority number one for the week.
It’s all too easy to get caught up in taking care of our daily responsibilities and end up bumping ourselves off that list. This week I want you to schedule 1 hour into your week to, either in one chunk, or even 10 minute increments, to do something that’s just for you.
During that time I encourage you to do something that will allow you to switch off your brain and become aware of the messages your soul is trying to pass on.
Journal, meditate, sit in silence, take a walk in nature. Whatever your favorite form or reflective alone time is, I want you to go and do that.
2. Ditch that soul sucking, people pleasing mindset.
“Hi, my name is Lexx and I’m a people pleaser.” Just like in AA, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem.
This baby has been an ongoing battle for me, and I work on it every single day. It’s been a huge contributor in embracing my authenticity and bring more joy into my life.
By letting go of others expectations and realizing that the only person whose emotions or reactions I can control are my own, I have lifted a huge weight from my shoulders.
Start doing things because they make YOU happy, bring YOU joy and light YOU up. Let everyone else worry about their own happiness, and focus first and foremost on your own.
3. While you’re at it, tell perfectionism to take a hike.
I also consider myself to be a recovering perfectionist, and let me tell you this has not been an easy battle. I’ve had many ups and downs, and it’s taken a lot of work, but the amount of freedom this has brought into my life has been well worth it.
Perfection is a damn unicorn. That baby just does not exist. I could go so deep into the reasons why perfection is an illusion, and I promise that I will in a later post.
For now, just trust me that perfectionism is holding you back and you need to let that soul sucker go. Embrace the motto of “Done is better than perfect”. I promise it will leave you feeling so much lighter.
4. Develop a self-love strategy and use it daily.
This is one of my favorite tools that I’ve created in my life as I am a huge fan of making lists. Seriously, lists may actually be another addiction, one for which I am definitely not in recovery.
You make lists and plans for everything else in your life from grocery shopping to packing for a trip, so why wouldn’t you have a list to refer to for your self-love practice?
Your self-love strategy is your way of having a plan of action for taking care of yourself. It’s filled with things that light you up and bring you joy, from self-care activities to uplifting mantras.

5. When your minds a-whirlin’, come back to the breath.
As a yoga teach I could nerd out for hours on the importance of breath and all the beautiful benefits of cultivating a regular breath practice.
That being said, I know you’re a busy lady and I respect your time so I’ll give you the coles notes version.
When we only allow our unconscious mind to control our breath we don’t get enough oxygen to remain in a calm state.
That feeling you get halfway through the day when you’ve been running from place to place and have barely had time to pee?
You’ve got a million thoughts and tasks running through your mind and can’t seem to get focused?
You can kick that to the curb with a quick session of deep breathing.
Simplest way to do this… Inhale through the nose for a 4 count, hold for a 4 count, exhale through the nose for a 4 count, hold for a 4 count. Repeat as many times as it takes to clear that beautiful mind of yours, then continue with your day.
Whew, this bad boy got a little bit wordy. Always seems to happen when I’m talking about something I’m wildly passionate about.
Thanks for being a trooper and sticking it out to the end with me.
Now it’s your turn to get a little wordy gorgeous gal.

Please join me in welcoming the incredible Jess Demunck to the blog today as she spills on all things radical self-love and sacred sisterhood.
Jess is a Life Coach, Teacher and Storyteller who supports young women to understand the story of their lives, embrace their innate authenticity and take back authorship.
This epic woman has over half a decade of experience in the education sector, so she knows what it takes to support others to achieve their highest potential.
She is extremely passionate about people and heart-centered connection, believes that stories have the power to both inspire and heal, and is on a mission to empower others through this powerful modality.
I am so excited to dive right in and share the interview below as she shares with us her perspective on how to lead from your heart and soul, chats about her love affair with words and gives us a sneak peak into how she honours and respects herself.
How do you connect with and honour your authentic self?
I listen. My mind, body, heart and soul are always telling me a story and I know that it is my job to listen. If I listen without judgement, and act without expectation, I'm a true and authentic expression of me.
What is your favourite way to be supported by the women in your life?
Words. Words of affirmation, understanding and connection is my love language. I feel seriously supported when people speak openly and honestly with me. Ugh- there's nothing better!
Share with us your favourite source of inspiration to get you fired up and focused.
In a practical sense- books and podcasts are my homeboys. Can you see a pattern here of my love affair with words? In a more spiritual sense- I get fired up when I am in alignment with my soul. That juicy, epic feeling of following your intuition and living on purpose is everything!
What makes you feel truly and deeply empowered?
The advances in women's rights at this point in history. I feel so excited and inspired by the future and know that momentum will only continue to grow and grow! The rate of change at the moment is empowering.
What lights you up most in the world?
A combination of green tea, the beach and my incredible fiancé .
How do you bring joy and fulfillment into your daily life?
By choosing to notice it. Joy and fulfilment aren't separate to me or to my experience- or to anyone else's for that matter. We experience what we choose to and so I choose to.
What's your favourite must read book for women?
I could rattle off a whole host of personal development books by the most brilliant female authors, however, I'm going to go with ANYTHING by Jodi Picoult. That woman is an absolute literary genius. Must reads.
How can my tribe build a deeper Sacred Sister connection with you?
